Creative Writing and Comprehension I. Summer Camp around Language Learning and Art Workshop We offer activities around languages and the cultures they convey with artistic workshops for K-6 students. Students will be engaged in special projects around language learning, mind games, skill building and an artistic workshop in the afternoon. Each session will introduce/reinforce two of the languages taught at Bay Language Academy, which includes French, Mandarin and Spanish. Time: 9:00am to 3:00pm (extended day available for additional fee) Activities: Mornings will be dedicated to activities in the language of choice The 1.5 hour art class is taught by credentialed K-12
educators and artists who have extensive teaching experiences in schools and
museums. Activities include some of the following: puppetry, "papier “maché”,
sculpture, mosaic, watercolor and acrylic painting, drawing, lithography,
recycled building and digital imaging.Multicultural activities and play-based learning through games and media Lunch break will be outside by the bay Creative art workshop These are some of the activities proposed, for more details regarding other sessions, please inquire with Bay Language Academy for our multicultural countries/languages based camps. Sample of our Summer Camp Art Curriculum : France: Explore Painting with the Impressionists: Students will gain familiarity with the landscape works of Monet, Renoir and Cezanne. Humans in Art Across cultures. Students will explore representations of the human figure in visual art across cultures and throughout history. They will practice figure drawing, create shadow puppets, and aboriginal skeletal paintings. They will build African Fang Reliquary Figures from the Ivory Coast and learn about the miraculous healing qualities of Milagros from Spain representing organs and body parts. Birds Life Cycle Project. Students will learn about different types of birds, be able to identify their body parts and describe their life cycle and habitats. They will create artistic investigations of birds from various perspectives. Fees and discountsThe fee for each one-week session is $350 for 9:00 to 3:00. A half-day program is $190 from 9:00 to 11:45. Extended care before and after camp (8:00 - 9:00 and 3:00 - 4:00) is available for $60/week. Both the base price and the extended care prices are for the entire week, and not available on a per day basis Registration is due May 20. Register by April 20th and get save 10% on the full time tuition. Register by May 4 and save 5%. Additional registration may be possible after May 20. A 10% sibling discount applies (not combinable with another discount)
For the camp sessions in June, extended care beyond 4pm is available, please inquire with Bay Language Academy. Guidelines Along with lunch, please pack snacks and a reusable bottle of water. Students should wear comfortable clothing. The number of students per session is limited. If interested, register promptly. Cancellation Policy Full refund when canceling more than 30 days before the start of the session. 50% refund when canceling 15-30 days before the start of the session. Payments will be refunded if Bay Language Academy must cancel a service due to lack of enrollment. No pro-rating of any fees or changes can be made due to student cancellations. No refunds will be given less than 15 days before the start of the session, including: (a) if a student is dismissed from a session due to disciplinary action, (b) if students leave early due to illness or personal commitments If an entire session is cancelled, any student will receive a refund. Intensive Language Learning Designed to reinforce, in 3 to 5 days, the basic linguistic structures that students need to achieve the intermediate level of proficiency in the target language. Strong emphasis is given to all aspects of language use including reading, writing and conversation. Only the language will be used in class to maximize student’s daily practice of the language. Students will be introduced to a literary work in the target language and will have the chance to expand their knowledge on the culture. When? Summer Break: June 18-22 June 25-29 August 13-17 August 20-24 August 27-31 (if school is not in session) Objectives This course will consolidate and further develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the target language. - Listening and speaking skills will be practiced in class through individual and group language activities, presentations, and discussions. - To improve their writing and analytical skills, students will be asked to start writing paragraphs/stories. - The grammar component will include an accelerated review of the fundamental elements of the language vocabulary and structure. Time : 9:00am-11:30am III. Creative Writing and Comprehension We will be offering starting in August (second and third week) a creative writing program that will focus on fostering an enjoyment for reading and writing. Students will read short stories and poems to inspire imitation in style and content. The objective of these classes are to improve writing skills. Students will express themselves on issues appropriate to their age. Not only will students invigorate their creative writing but they will also empower their language in essays for school and personal statements for applications. They will work on reinforcing/introducing the 4 pillars of writing: (a) Pre-writing; (b) Writing;(c) Editing; (d) Proofreading (with some of the following specifics) (1) refining grammar, sentence structure, and linguistic skills; (2) comparing and contrasting essays (3) Note-Taking (Cornell and more,...) (4) crafting arguments (5) using textual evidence and quotes (6) literary research skills By providing our students with the venue to speak, clarify thoughts, and research ideas, participants will be able to gain greater experience and acquire a sens of critical thinking. Their future communication skills will improve during our speech/debate classes, as they will be able to construct a set of arguments to defend their position.
